Apple iPhone 14 Pro test: the most rational iPhone?

Zapping UPtech by Men’s Up Epicurieux EP8: In the footsteps of Dom Pérignon in a Kia EV6

What’s new in the 14 range? Between the iPhone 14, which essentially incorporates the qualities of the iPhone 13, and the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is a bit too big for us, we chose the most rational of the family: the iPhone 14 Pro. And from its new features (power, photo, video) to its renewed ergonomics (display and Dynamic Island), we are convinced that we made the right choice.

Design and construction: a more muscular iPhone 14 Pro

After a first contact on Apple’s Champs-Élysées for its launch, the time has come to really take control of the new iPhone 14 Pro. The smartphone, as has been the case since 2020 with the iPhone 12, arrives in a very slim box since it only contains the USB-C to Lightning charging cable, as well as the small usage papers, not forgetting the SIM drawer key. Unsurprisingly, our 14 Pro is only slightly thicker (7.85mm), slightly taller (147.5mm) and slightly heavier (206g) than our iPhone 13 Pro. This is due to on-board technology, but also and above all to the, even more so, impressive photo sensors at the rear. An additional thickness that is also particularly felt when placing the two smartphones: the 14 Pro “rocks” much more than its predecessor on a square surface. Strict protective shell. Otherwise, we’re staying on familiar ground: volume controls, ringtone/mute button and SIM drawer on the left, power/lock button on the right, Lightning (soon USB-C?) port on the left. bottom. There is no need to go back to the qualities of design, manufacture and finish of the device, always irreproachable. The only noticeable difference to the naked eye: the disappearance of the upper notch in favor of the famous Dynamic Island, which can be seen under the screen off. Special mention to the Intense Violet color, very successful.

Ergonomics and screen: more fun than ever

But then, if it doesn’t change so much on the outside, what does it bring new? You already know it: Dynamic Island. Unlike the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus (coming soon) that retain the upper notch, the iPhone 14 Pro, like the 14 Pro Max, incorporates a small dynamic and adaptive island, positioned a little lower. This interactive pill works as a contextual widget and allows quick access to certain information and functions depending on the application used. To name a few uses: navigation (Apple Plans, Google Maps), audio streaming (Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, etc.), audio/video calls (native phone, WhatsApp, Instagram, Skype), and specific functions for iOS System (Face ID, AirPlay and AirDrop, charging, silent and focus modes, hotspot, timer/clock/stopwatch, screen recording, voice recorder). All features can be accessed in a more fun way, though not necessarily faster for everyone. The little floating island is a delight to use, especially in tandem with the 14 Pro’s 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with Always-On Display’s 120Hz refresh rate. It’s also even brighter (1600 nits in HDR, 2000 nits peak outdoors) than before. You will still have to get used to the area of intrusion of the pill when watching video / photo in full screen, where the notch “only” cut out the side edge in landscape mode. To see if certain applications, such as games, will have an adaptive version of the interface, to avoid hiding information on the screen. Last detail: Dynamic Island is slightly less accessible by default in one-handed use, and does not descend with the screen when activating this accessibility feature. Perhaps an update under consideration at Apple? Regardless, the iPhone 14 Pro brings an important touch of freshness to the daily user experience.

Performance and multimedia: maximum power

Optical zoom x3, but digital x2Photo credit: Nass M. for Men’s UP

“It’s the best iPhone we’ve ever made.” This cult phrase, which flows naturally from each new generation, is more true today than ever. Beneath the display and its Dynamic Island, iPhone 14 Pro is powered by Apple’s super-powerful A16 Bionic chip with 6GB of RAM. Instead of going into raw performance figures, let’s talk about daily use with a concrete example. Where our iPhone 13 Pro had to take a while to load and show all the richness of a photo taken at that moment (it must be said and remembered that they are of excellent quality), the iPhone 14 Pro is much more reactive and immediate. . Same remark about our power-intensive applications like DJI Go 4 in drone flight and gaming. Always more responsive, which also goes for the updated photo/video equipment. 48 mp wide angle, 12 mp ultra wide angle, x2 digital zoom (we would have liked the optics although it is still very effective) and x3 optical zoom are on the program. In detail, the shots are generally more detailed than with the iPhone 13 Pro, especially when zooming in on the image. A similar but more subtle observation in night photos. Portrait mode also takes advantage of the x3 zoom for very convincing but perfect results, especially on contours like hair and other animal fur, as is often the case. On video, unambiguously: “recorded on iPhone” or nothing! Cinematic mode goes to 4K, but still requires some post-hoc adjustments (point tracking and depth of field) for optimal results. Finally, a special mention to the Action mode and its simply incredible stabilization. Prowess worthy of the GoPro 10 Black’s HyperSmooth 4.0! It cannot be denied: the iPhone 14 Pro is more than ever a benchmark in terms of video creation, not to mention ProRes formats for audiovisual professionals.

Autonomy and conclusion: Always in view

No ultra-fast charging for the iPhone 14 Pro yetPhoto credit: Nass M. for Men’s UP

Not surprisingly, the iPhone 14 Pro is thicker than the previous one. The Apple smartphone has a new battery, with a capacity of 3,200 mAh (compared to 3,095 mAh in the iPhone 13 Pro). Enough to provide an additional autonomy booster not only in daily use, but also and above all to maintain resistance while turning on the Always On screen when the screen is locked. Although it does not consume much energy thanks to the operation of OLED technology (only the pixels in question are lit), this functionality is still an additional source of consumption. In use, the 14 Pro provides a good day of autonomy in multipurpose and multimedia use (music, GPS, calls, social networks) without a problem. On the other hand, it is in terms of recharging that Apple is left with a small margin of progress, since recharging at 20 W (block not included) recharges “only” 50% in 30 minutes, which is not radically more efficient. than 15W MagSafe wireless charging. Perhaps the possible arrival of USB-C to the next generation could give charging a boost? Meanwhile, the iPhone 14 Pro represents for us THE right choice within the new range: Dynamic Island, 6.1 inches, A16 Bionic, ideal compromise. At UPtech, it’s validated!
