Featuring the new 40.2 MP “X-Trans™ CMOS 5 HR” sensor to deliver the best image quality in X-series history
TOKYO, September 8, 2022 – FUJIFILM Corporation (CEO, Chairman and CEO: Mr. Teiichi Goto) is pleased to announce the launch of the “FUJIFILM X-H2” (X-H2) mirrorless digital camera on September 8. From 2022 This model joins the range of X-series mirrorless cameras, known for their outstanding image quality in both stills and video, thanks to Fujifilm’s exclusive color reproduction technologies.
The X-H2 features the new 40.2 MP “X-Trans™ CMOS 5 HR”*1 back-illuminated sensor and ultra-fast “X-Processor 5”. This new flagship of the range offers the highest definition in the history of the X series, both in still images and video: it provides high resolution shots and becomes the first APS-C camera in the world*2 capable of recording internally 8K/30P in Apple ProRes*3.
The image quality improvements brought by the new sensor are combined with advanced features such as a minimum standard sensitivity of ISO 125, a maximum shutter speed of 1/180,000 sec. with the electronic shutter and PIXEL SHIFT MULTI SHOT to improve the visual representation. The X-H2 also offers features and interfaces to aid shooting, such as Subject Detection AF powered by deep learning technology, which automatically detects and tracks more diverse subjects such as animals and birds; integrated five-axis image stabilization up to 7 EV*4; 5.76 million-dot electronic viewfinder at 0.8x magnification; and the CFexpressTM Type B*5 compatible memory card slot, which allows users to enjoy the X-H2’s high image quality in a wide variety of situations.
With the launch of the high-end FUJIFILM X-H2 high-end model alongside the high-speed X-H2S high-end model, our flagship ‘XH Series’ range now offers two options. The high-speed flagship X-H2S excels at capturing moving subjects, while the high-definition flagship X-H2 delivers exceptional image quality that pushes the traditional boundaries of the format. with this choice
Between two great products, Fujifilm covers all the shooting needs of professional photographers and videographers.
Integration of new X-Trans™ CMOS 5 HR sensor and ultra-fast X-Processor 5 to deliver the best image quality in X Series history
The X-H2 features the new 40.2 MP “X-Trans™ CMOS 5 HR” back-illuminated sensor. This new 40.2-megapixel sensor offers a new image processing algorithm to improve resolution without compromising signal-to-noise ratio, delivering stunning image quality. The improved structure of
its photosites effectively capture a greater amount of light, allowing a value of ISO 125 in standard sensitivity and not in the extended option. This is particularly useful for outdoor daytime photography, or to take advantage of the bokeh offered by a large aperture.
The use of the new sensor has made it possible to control the exposure time with greater precision, improving the maximum shutter speed by 2.5 EV: from the previous 1/32,000 sec, it is now 1/180,000 sec. Users can leave the iris fully open in bright conditions, such as a sunny beach or ski slope, or even capture split-second movements.
For the first time in the X-series, this model features Pixel Shift Multi-Shot: it uses the stabilization mechanism to very precisely shift the image sensor while capturing 20 frames automatically with a single shutter release. Dedicated ‘Pixel Shift Combiner’ software processes the captured views to produce an image of approximately 160 million pixels, perfect for advertising photography and digital archiving.
The X-H2 supports the HEIF image format, which combines 10-bit image quality and a file size that is up to 30% smaller than normal JPEG files, reinforcing Fujifilm’s reputation for quality images. extreme directly into the camera.
Excellent video performance, suitable for the needs of professionals
The integration of the new sensor allowed 8K movies to be recorded internally, at 30 frames per second with 4:2:2 10-bit color sampling. The X-H2 takes advantage of the same heat dissipation design as the X-H2S to enable 8K/30P recording for approximately 160 minutes*6, enabling efficient 8K recording. In addition, it supports 8K upsampling to produce 4K videos of
very high quality, taking full advantage of the high definition sensor to record videos in the highest resolution.
The X-H2 supports three Apple ProRes codecs: ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 422, and ProRes 422 LT. When recording in ProRes, the X-H2 can also record proxy video in ProRes 422 Proxy*7. This eases the workload when editing 8K video and smooths the entire workflow from shooting to post-processing.
The X-H2 offers a digital zoom function*8 that takes advantage of the 40.2 MP sensor to deliver 2x digital zoom with minimal or even undetectable loss of resolution in 4K recording, even when using a distance lens fixed focus. The XF18-120mmF4 LM PZ WR therefore offers a double reach, with a smooth transition to digital zoom when the lens reaches its maximum focal length.
When paired with a compatible HDMI device from Atomos or Blackmagic Design, the X-H2’s 12-bit RAW video output can be recorded in Apple ProRes or Blackmagic RAW at up to 8K resolution and up to 29.97 frames per second. .
In addition to F-Log, the X-H2 supports F-Log2, which records an adjusted dynamic range of more than 13 EV*9. This range, wider than the current F-Log, expands the calibration potential.
Advanced AF capabilities to accurately capture details
The X-Processor 5 incorporates subject detection autofocus based on deep learning technology, which automatically detects and tracks a wider range of subjects, including animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, planes and trains, as well as faces and human eyes. Thus, the user can concentrate on composition and creativity, confident that the X-H2 will handle continuous focus with precision.
Compared to current models, the new HD sensor incorporates a higher number of phase-detection pixels, improving AF-S’s ability to focus on a subject with high-frequency patterns. The user can focus precisely in situations where AF-S is commonly used, such as landscapes and portraits. The X-H2 also incorporates an improved predictive AF algorithm developed
for the X-H2S, ensuring reliable focus even in AF-C.
The X-H2 features a focus indicator for the first time as a focus assist during movie recording, allowing for more precise focus adjustment. It can also be associated with focus peaking.
8K video recording requires higher focus accuracy. The video AF algorithm has been optimized to improve accuracy and allow users to fully rely on autofocus while shooting in 8K.
Hardware and workflow that enhance the content creation experience
An integrated 5-axis stabilization mechanism, managed by the X-Processor 5 and a detection system, allows compensation of up to 7 EV. This gives users the freedom to work on the go in conditions where support was previously essential, such as in low light. Additionally, the built-in image stabilization system can precisely shift the sensor, allowing the X-H2 to deliver Pixel Shift Multi-Shot.
The X-H2 features a high-magnification, high-definition electronic viewfinder with 5.76 million dots and 0.8x. It also offers a smooth frame rate of up to 120fps and significantly improves control of parallax and distortion that normally occur when the eye is moving, for example.
Perfect readability of the viewfinder.
The case design is identical to that of the X-H2S, with 79 protective gaskets that ensure high resistance to dust and moisture. The X-H2 is therefore designed to withstand the rigors of daily professional use and function normally in temperatures as low as -10°C. The top LCD screen, customizable AF ON button, 1.62 million-dot vari-angle LCD screen, and separate movie-record button ensure comfortable operation.
The X-H2 incorporates a CFexpress™ Type B memory card port and an SD UHS-II memory card port. Unleash the full potential of the X-H2’s exceptional video performance with CFexpress™ Type B cards.*10
The X-H2S/X-H2 can be combined with the “FT-XH” File Transmitter to enable remote video recording over a wired or wireless network*11. Up to four X-H2S / X-H2 boxes can be connected simultaneously to manage their operation from a computer browser:
