Soon you will be able to replace your driving license online

The Société de l’assurance automobile (SAAQ) is going digital: Quebecers will now renew their driver’s license and conduct their other transactions online.

SAAQ steps up the accelerator to modernize and moves most of its services to a transactional platform, SAAQclic, starting February 20, so customers can perform certain tasks themselves online instead of showing up at a service center .

This change cost the government $458 million. “First we had to modernize human, material and financial resources, and then review the services to our clients,” SAAQ VP Karl Malenfant explained.

Citizens will therefore have a “customer file”, in which they will find all the information related to their driving license and their registration. It is on this platform that all transactions will now be completed, without having to make an appointment. Services will be accessible at all times.

“Our goals were really to promote customer autonomy, save significant time, simplify procedures and reduce travel,” Karl Malenfant underlined.

Despite the digital transition, the service points will remain open and the SAAQ ensures that no closure is planned for the moment. “Precisely we want to keep them to provide a more personalized service to people who need it, who have certain difficulties, or who have a greater risk factor,” explained the general director of the SAAQ, Denis Marsolais.

“All the people who are self-employed are going to go through the platform,” he added immediately. But the people who need it will go to the point of service”.

Patience

Citizens will need to be patient in the period after the implementation of the new platform, warns Jean-Philippe McKenzie, vice president of the SAAQ.

“Our employees will be in a learning period during this period, so we will ask customers to avoid coming in without an appointment,” he said.

Before considering going to a service point, SAAQ invites its customers to explore the virtual platform to see if the transaction can be carried out independently.

In addition, services will slow down during the bulk data transfer from SAAQ to the new system from January 26 to February 19 (see box).

The SAAQ platform is the first site of the new government authentication service that will eventually replace clicSÉQUR. In the coming months, the services of other public bodies will also migrate to this new system.
