What is better with the iPhone 14?
To begin with, you should know that when you buy an iPhone 14 you will not have the right to the same storage capacity as in an iPhone 12. The memory of the basic model has thus doubled between the two versions, passing 64GB for the iPhone 12 to 128 GB for the iPhone 14. Both editions are entitled to a version with 256 GB. On the other hand, to switch to the 512GByou’ll have to invest in an iPhone 12. Good to know, as the space is not expandable (there’s no SD card slot on either the iPhone 12 or iPhone 14).
a better camera
Another key difference: the photosensors. We are entitled to two lenses on each iPhone, albeit arranged differently. In fact, these are arranged in quincunx on the iPhone 14 while flush with the case on the back of the iPhone 12. But that’s a detail.
No, what really changes is that on the iPhone 14, Apple offers the auto focus while it is only manual for the iPhone 12, as far as the front sensor is concerned. Still up front, you should also know that the proposed aperture is ƒ/1.9 for the most recent model. Therefore, the iPhone 14 will capture more light than the iPhone 12, which is limited to ƒ/2.2. The two phones for their part are equipped with a lens of the same definition: twelve megapixels.
However, on the video side, the cinematic mode that allows you to achieve smart focus like a pro is only offered with the iPhone 14. The iPhone 12 also has the ability to activate this feature, but Cupertino has not updated it accordingly. And the same goes for the rear photosensor, whose openings are equally better with an iPhone 14.
Autonomy: iPhone 12 VS iPhone 14
The iPhone 14 lasts a bit longer on a single charge than the iPhone 12. We’re talking about nineteen hours and twenty-eight minutes for the new model, according to the test carried out by our colleagues at 01net. But with an iPhone 12, you’ll be limited to just seventeen hours and four minutes of general use. It’s two hours less!
These results are quite close to those obtained in the laboratory by Apple.
some more features
About him cinematic modeYou should know that the iPhone 14 also has the functionality of accident detection. This takes advantage of the various sensors such as the microphone, the accelerometer or the GPS to recognize accidents in cars or trucks.
The iPhone 12 does not have the right to do so, when comparing its technical sheet we realize once again that this device, however, has the necessary equipment. It’s a shame. With this are the photographic stylesa selection of filters to touch up your shots, which are also reserved for the iPhone 14.
To put an end to the differences on the software side, we can finally mention the satellite connectivity. This is still reserved for iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, and iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
iPhone 14 works better
Last brand difference between iPhone 14 and iPhone 12: power. Apple chose to integrate the iPhone 13 Pro processor into the iPhone 14, an A15 Bionic chip with a six-core CPU and a five-core GPU. The iPhone 12, for its part, is a generation behind and is entitled to the A14 Bionic chip with one less graphics card core. This means that your iPhone 14 will be more suitable for gaming and will handle overheating better.
Benchmarks also show that the iPhone 14 is more efficient than the iPhone 12. Using the Geekbench 5 app, we get the score of 4,616 points with a fully inflated iPhone 14 (multi-core) vs. 3,864 points “only” for an iPhone 12 under the same conditions.
Some advantages with an iPhone 12
more color options
Now let’s move on to the benefits of buying an iPhone 12. For starters, you will be entitled to more colors offered in the Apple Store. Here, the manufacturer has launched the mobile in six different versions: purple, blue (our favourite), green, red, white or black. On the side of the iPhone 14, it will be: blue, purple, midnight, starlight or red. Purple is a bit lighter on the iPhone 14, same for purple.
much better price
With this, the iPhone 12 is obviously cheaper compared to the iPhone 14. The exact prices are as follows:
- iPhone 12 (64GB): 809 euro
- iPhone 12 (128 GB): 859 euros
- iPhone 12 (256 GB): 979 euros
- iPhone 14 (128GB): €1,019
- iPhone 14 (256 GB): 1,149 euros
- iPhone 14 (512 GB): 1,409 euros
In short, the iPhone 14 is 210 euros more expensive than the iPhone 12 in its basic version. But it has twice the memory and, as seen above, a few more key features and a faster processor.
The iPhone 12 is thinner
On the design side, beyond the colors, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 14 are very similar. A big advantage concerns the most recent model: a more discreet notch, less wide than before. Instead, the iPhone 12 is less thick than the iPhone 14. There is also a difference of a few grams in terms of mass. This could play out for skinny jean regulars. On the other hand, it is difficult to reuse the case of an iPhone 11 on an iPhone 12 while to go from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 14 you will not necessarily have to invest in an additional case.
Apple includes wired headphones Headphones in the case of the iPhone 12. With the iPhone 14, it’s over. No charger either, nor with either.
what does not change
Also, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 14 are actually very similar. Its screen, in particular, offers the same definition and the same size if we exclude the case with the reduced notch of the iPhone 14. The materials chosen for the chassis are also identical. On the network side, the iPhone 14 is well-equipped with Bluetooth 5.3 versus the 5.0 version of the iPhone 12, but this is a pretty insignificant difference. The rest of the aspects of telecommunications are very similar: Wi-Fi, 5G, AirDrop…
In addition, the biometric unlocking solution of face identification it is available on both the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 14. Finally, for the commonalities, we will note that the waterproof it is also present with our two opponents, as is the integration of a dual port for the SIM card and the Lightning socket for the power supply.
Our opinion: we prefer to choose the iPhone 12
In short, what can we conclude? The iPhone 14 and iPhone 12 look very similar, but under the hood there are still plenty of differences. The camera is better with the new model, as is its power or its autonomy. There are even some features missing from the iPhone 12.
However, for us these differences do not justify the price difference of almost 25%. We will therefore prefer to choose an iPhone 12 whose speed or even the shots still allow us to obtain excellent results on a day-to-day basis. Only true professionals will make a difference, but these aren’t Apple’s preferred targets. If you’re looking for a bigger screen or next-level performance speed, it’s best to compare the iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro instead.
