The Midnight Suns, a childhood dream for Firaxis teams
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is the new project from Firaxis, the parents of the XCOM saga known for being one of the biggest franchises in the tactical game genre. With this title, the developers are working for the first time on an IP that is not theirs, and not just anyone, since it is about the superheroes of the Marvel universe. Inevitably, with such a license being over eighty years old, there are a wide variety of stories to tell. So when Marvel approached Firaxis to suggest developing a game around their characters, the studio’s response surprised them.
During an interview ahead of the game’s imminent release, Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, explained that the teams chose to adapt an arc that was close to their hearts when they were younger: The rise of the children of midnighta 1990s crossover. This event features different heroes from the supernatural side of the Marvel universe coming together to take on Lillith, the mother of demons.. Among the original members of this team we find characters that are still in Marvel news such as Ghost Rider, Blade or Morbius, but also somewhat forgotten heroes such as Hannibal King or Frank Drake. So, inevitably, when you want to make a game for the general public, you have to make choices and compromises, as Jake Salomon explains:
When we chose the Midnight Sons story, there were very few characters from this period that were still relevant, like Frank Drake or Hannibal King. Inevitably, in the batch, there are heroes that people may not know about and who are no longer very relevant today. So we decided to take the members of this group that are still known today, like Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze, but also Morbius, who will be added later in DLC. On top of that, we added supernatural heroes not very well known to the general public, like Nico Minoru from Runaways or Magik from X-Men, but despite that, we wanted to offer an even bigger cast, with characters that people would recognize. . . -Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns
A complicated encounter with the Avengers?
In the game universe, the Midnight Suns are composed of Blade, Nico Minoru, Magik, and Ghost Rider (not Johnny Blaze, the new one, Robbie Reyes) led by Caretaker, a witch several hundred years old. The story of the game begins when Lillith, the mother of demons, is summoned by Hydra. Faced with this great threat, the Avengers decide to team up with the Midnight Suns to awaken Hunter, Lillith’s son, who defeated his mother three hundred years ago.. Thus, this character that the player embodies throughout the adventure will represent a bridge between these two groups of heroes that do not necessarily get along at first. This is what Jake Salomon explained to us during our interview:
We wanted to tell this story that features these supernatural heroes having to deal with a supernatural threat returning to Earth. But while the Midnight Suns think it’s up to them to solve this problem, the demonic entity attacks the Avengers first, causing Iron Man, Captain Marvel, or Captain America to tell each other that it’s up to them to stop Lillith. So we have a friction between the Avengers, the greatest heroes on earth, the most famous superheroes in the world, and on the other hand, we have this band of little-known superheroes, most of whom are young. Therefore, the relationship between the two groups is a central element of the game’s story. In this context, the player plays a completely new character that doesn’t even exist in the comics and is found between these two teams facing off in a competition that pushes the player to make decisions. -Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Beyond the clash against Lillith, the rivalry between the Midnight Suns and the Avengers is thus an important plot element of the title. This can be felt in the different phases of exploration in the Abbey, allowing you to interact with the heroes that inhabit the building.
